Art Deco architecture is a style of architecture that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, defined by its use of geometric shapes, sleek lines, and ornamental details. It was a response to the traditional architectural styles that had dominated the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, such as neoclassical and Gothic Revival styles.
It was influenced by a variety of sources, including the machine age, ancient Egyptian and Aztec art, and the decorative arts of the Far East. Buildings in this style often feature decorative elements such as zigzag patterns, sunburst motifs, and stylized foliage.
One of the hallmarks of Art Deco is the use of modern materials, such as concrete, steel, and glass. Many buildings in this style were designed to be functional as well as decorative, with features such as rooftop gardens, streamlined facades, and integrated lighting systems.
It was popular throughout the world, but it was particularly prominent in cities such as New York, Paris, and Miami. Some of the most famous examples include the Empire State Building in New York City, the Hoover Dam in Nevada, and the Ocean Drive Historic District in Miami Beach.
There are many examples of Art Deco architecture around the world, especially in major cities that experienced a construction boom in the 1920s and 1930s.
