In the heart of Cuiaba, Brazil, a remarkable transformation is underway as New York-based studio Victor B. Ortiz Architecture, in collaboration with Obreval Arquitetura, unveils the masterplan for the GS Headquarters. This sculptural project aims to revive a once arid site, turning it into a lush, self-sustaining urban oasis.
The GS Headquarters is a bold and ambitious undertaking, encompassing three undulating mixed-use towers that will house corporate spaces, restaurants, retail outlets, and entertainment venues. This integrated design creates a dynamic environment where people can work, socialize, and experience the city in a entirely new way.
At the core of this project is a deep commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By infusing the space with native plant-life, the architects have set out to create a sanctuary for biodiversity, offering a welcome retreat from the surrounding urban landscape. The central lake, a key feature of the design, serves a dual purpose – regulating the microclimate to minimize the urban heat island effect, while providing a calming respite for those within the development.
“Because Cuiaba experiences extreme temperatures throughout the year, the design incorporates a central lake,” explains Brazilian-American architect Victor Ortiz. “This body of water serves to regulate the surrounding microclimate and provides a serene space for those working and spending time within the development.”
The commitment to sustainability extends beyond the lush greenery and cooling waters. The GS Headquarters will prioritize the use of cross-laminated timber, a renewable and low-carbon building material, combined with strategically placed concrete elements to optimize cost-efficiency. This hybrid approach not only minimizes the project’s carbon footprint, but also embodies a holistic vision for environmental responsibility.
With a total area of 42,000 square meters, the GS Headquarters is poised to become a landmark development in Cuiaba, setting a new precedent for sustainable urban design in Brazil. Victor B. Ortiz’s sculptural vision will shape a community-focused workspace that seamlessly integrates nature, technology, and human well-being – a true oasis in the heart of the city.
