Dubai is getting the world’s greenest highway, the ‘Green Spine’ by URB. This project, part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, will run on 100% renewable energy, mainly solar power. The highway will have electric trams on solar panel tracks, surrounded by urban farms and gardens for residents.
The Green Spine will stretch 64 kilometers along Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road (E311), benefiting around eight million residents. It aims to promote walking and cycling and cut the city’s carbon footprint. URB, known for projects like the Dubai Reefs Project and Dubai Mangroves, is leading this initiative.
Changing Transportation and Energy Use
No more overhead power lines. Solar panels on the tram tracks will power the electric trams, generating over 300 megawatts of clean energy—enough for about 130,000 homes in Dubai. By switching to solar power, URB expects to cut carbon emissions by 1,051,200 tonnes yearly.
The Green Spine will have smart tech like traffic and energy sensors. Native plants along paths will cool and clean the air. Residents can jog, farm, and enjoy green spaces. A special drainage system will prevent flooding and manage rainwater.
A Hub for Development and Community Life
The Green Spine is more than a highway; it’s a whole city. Besides solar trams, there will be mixed-use spaces, reducing long commutes. Schools, museums, and other facilities will make it a family-friendly hub.
URB plans to plant over a million native trees along the highway, supporting Dubai’s 20-minute city idea.
Greening the City
Urban farms, green roofs, parks, and gardens will be key to the Green Spine. These spaces will regulate temperatures and offer recreation. Bioswales will clean rainwater for irrigation. Walking, cycling, and recreational paths are also in the works.
While the construction start date is unknown, the Green Spine is a big part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, possibly opening in 2040. This project shows Dubai’s dedication to sustainability and sets a new standard for urban development globally.
