London-based design studio Based Upon is known for its cool creations, and their latest piece, the Twist/D, is truly amazing. This fresh take on the classic piano design is perfect for an art show, breaking all the rules with its unique twist.
Based Upon has teamed up with luxury brands like Rolls-Royce and Tiffany & Co. to make collectible items for the elite. Following the success of The Baby edition of five baby grands, the Twist/D brings the grandeur of the universe right into your living room.
Ian Abell, co-founder of the studio, says each creation balances functionality and art. He points out that their goal with the piano is to make a real piece of art while keeping the instrument’s essence. The Twist/D enhances the experience for both the player and the listener, mixing sculpture with technical skill to deliver the touch, feel, and sound of a top-notch concert grand.
The piano’s spiraling shape captures the energy of a dancer’s movement, inspired by the Golden Spiral’s proportions. For great sound, the Twist/D uses 12 computer-modeled Steinways and Bechsteins from different times, giving a variety of tonal qualities. It also includes audio samples from the Isle of Skye, using special reverb techniques to add a unique touch from the island’s landscape.
Using advanced materials and methods, Based Upon has created a musical instrument that connects with nature. The lightweight frame, made from a composite material, allows for the piano’s unusual shape without losing strength. The keys are made from sustainable ebony and ivory alternatives, showing a commitment to the environment. Priced at $194,600, the Twist/D is made for music composers.
