For centuries, the power of optical invisibility has tantalized humankind’s imagination as the ultimate superpower fantasy. From myths of ancient Greece to Harry Potter’s iconic cloak, the idea of effortlessly vanishing from sight has endured as one of science fiction’s most coveted mirages.
Yet if a plucky British company has its way, cloaking devices may soon shed their fictional shackles and enter the real world. Invisibility Shield Co. has followed up its pioneering 2022 debut with second-generation “invisibility shields” that bring the stuff of childhood dreams tantalizingly close to reality.
Central to these dissimulation devices is an array of precision-engineered lenses that bend and manipulate light in ways that render people and objects behind them, in the company’s words, “optically camouflaged.” By redirecting background light across the shield’s lens-covered face, observers are essentially shown a continuation of the scenery on either side – creating the illusion that anything behind the array has been erased from view.
While the fundamental technology might sound simple enough, refining it into a portable, user-friendly form has been a four-year odyssey for Invisibility Shield Co’s team. Their new Kickstarter campaign showcases a range of compact, collapsible designs that appear to have cracked that challenge.
The entry-level “Mini” model stands just 8 inches tall when assembled yet promises full transparency-cloaking abilities in a package that can be easily stowed in a bag. Scaling up, the company’s flagship “Full Size” shield stretches to 3 feet high – enough to fully conceal an adult – while the gargantuan 6-foot “Megashield” offers mobile concealment for entire groups.
Waterproof, self-supporting and made from 100% recyclable materials, these next-generation invisibility cloaks place a major emphasis on portability and convenience. The team hopes such qualities will help their devices transcend novelty status and find use across entertainment, security and even ethical surveillance applications.
Of course, any technology that can literally make things “disappear” raises myriad moral considerations around privacy, consent and public safety. Invisibility Shield Co. insists its proprietary optical trickery is designed solely for responsible usages. Still, the existential conundrums posed by its products may ultimately prove tougher to untangle than the physics behind them.
But such quandaries are for another day. For now, the company appears focused on realizing its vision of putting superpowers into the hands of the masses – one precisely calibrated lens array at a time. Because when functional invisibility finally emerges from the realm of science fiction, you can be certain all eyes will be upon it.
