In a groundbreaking development, the Japanese startup Shimizu is in the process of creating Arma, an innovative foldable e-scooter that cleverly collapses into the dimensions of a 12 or 13-inch laptop, allowing users the convenience of effortlessly stowing it in their backpacks. Alternatively, users can opt to carry it using the top handle, transforming the e-scooter into a portable toolbox-like companion on the go.

Despite being in the prototyping phase, Shimizu expresses confidence in overcoming the formidable physics challenges associated with their foldable model. The design concept for Arma envisions it folding into a frame roughly the size of an A4 paper, with the promise of being smaller than a 14-inch laptop, showcasing its compact and portable nature.

Shimizu’s target is to achieve a final weight of approximately 10 pounds. If successful, Arma’s first prototype could claim the title of the world’s smallest and lightest e-scooter, according to the startup. The design team is also exploring the possibility of enabling Arma to transition seamlessly from carry to ride mode in just about 30 seconds, a feature that may require a meticulous approach to the hinge and locking system, as demonstrated in the prototype video released by Shimizu.

One noteworthy feature that Shimizu plans to incorporate into Arma is the option for swappable batteries, providing e-scooter enthusiasts with added flexibility. Charging via USB Type-C, Arma is anticipated to achieve a full recharge in just two hours, delivering an impressive range of up to 15 kilometers on a single battery charge.

Although the exact material composition of Arma is yet to be disclosed by Shimizu, the silver tone suggests the possible use of aluminum, potentially making the foldable e-scooter lighter compared to traditional steel counterparts.

Arma’s inaugural prototype made its debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, allowing attendees an up-close look at the innovative ride. As of the current update, the design team is diligently working on the second prototype, with plans to unveil the final design by the end of 2023. Anticipating an exciting year ahead, Shimizu aims to test the second prototype in the first quarter of 2024, followed by mass production in the second quarter, with the expected shipment of the first batches around the third quarter of the year.
