Santa Monica-based AI trailblazer Rabbit took center stage at CES 2024, revealing their latest innovation – the r1, a handheld touchscreen AI device with walkie-talkie and camera capabilities. Breaking free from the smartphone dependency, the r1 streamlines tasks typically performed by various apps into one sleek portable device. From booking flights and ordering meals to securing a taxi, the r1 promises an app-free online experience at the press of a button.
The powerhouse behind the r1 lies in its proprietary OS, aptly named Rabbit OS, and the groundbreaking Large Action Model (LAM). LAM enables the AI device to comprehend and execute a wide array of tasks, going beyond basic commands such as turning lights on and off or providing weather updates. With Rabbit’s innovative approach, the r1 becomes a personal assistant, effortlessly navigating tasks without the need for multiple apps.
Teaming up with design firm Teenage Engineering, Rabbit ensures the r1 is as aesthetically pleasing as it is functional. Drawing inspiration from the nostalgia of Tamagotchi and the convenience of Post-it notes, the device boasts a luminous orange design, a 2.88-inch touchscreen display, and a user-friendly interface, weighing in at just 115 grams.
The integration of Rabbit Eye, a 360-degree rotating camera located above the scroll wheel, adds a new dimension to the r1. This feature allows users to engage in work video calls and even request the AI device to scan and identify objects in their surroundings. Practical applications include suggesting recipes based on the contents of a user’s refrigerator, showcasing the device’s versatility.
Addressing privacy concerns, Rabbit emphasizes that the r1 is a standalone device with optional WiFi and cellular connectivity. Equipped with a 2.3 GHz MediaTek Helio P35 processor, 4 GB of memory, and 128 GB of storage, the r1 ensures a seamless user experience. Rabbit assures users they have control over data storage and system actions, emphasizing that the device’s hardware prioritizes privacy.
For those eager to experience the r1 firsthand, Rabbit’s CES 2024 booth offers an opportunity. Alternatively, pre-sales have been open since January 9th, with the first batch already selling 10,000 units by January 10th. Priced at $199, the r1 comes without additional monthly subscriptions, with US shipping commencing in late March 2024 and global orders dispatched later in the year.
