The unveiling of Oman’s ambitious $2.4 billion Omani Mountain Destination atop Jabal al Akhdar marks a significant leap in high-altitude development. Crafted in collaboration with AtkinsRéalis and local communities, this project promises to be a pinnacle of architectural ingenuity, blending seamlessly with the region’s rugged terrain and rich cultural tapestry.
At an elevation of 2,400 meters, the Omani Mountain Destination is set to become a beacon of luxury living, boasting 2,527 homes, 2,000 hospitality rooms, and a bespoke health and wellness village dubbed ‘The Vessel’. Embracing an ethos of sustainability, the destination aims to accommodate a thriving residential community of over 8,000 inhabitants alongside an influx of daily and overnight visitors, all while maintaining an average yearly temperature of 22°C.
Central to its ethos is a commitment to social and environmental stewardship. The Omani Mountain Destination is envisioned as more than just a collection of residences and hotels; it’s a sanctuary for biodiversity, a hub for cultural exchange, and a playground for adventure seekers. With amenities ranging from a biodiversity center and high-altitude sports training facilities to scenic amphitheaters and remote escarpment walks, every aspect of the development is designed to coexist harmoniously with nature.
The project’s environmental consciousness extends beyond its borders, encompassing initiatives such as the Wadi Al Harbi Park, which will offer a cornucopia of recreational activities while preserving the pristine beauty of its surroundings. Enhanced transport infrastructure, including a new cable car system and improved access roads, ensures that the destination remains accessible to both locals and tourists alike.
AtkinsRéalis’ ‘Seed’ approach to sustainability serves as the guiding principle behind the Omani Mountain Destination, with a focus on achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions, harnessing renewable energy sources, and minimizing environmental impact. By prioritizing pedestrian-friendly design and native flora preservation, the project aims to strike a delicate balance between progress and preservation.
Inclusive development lies at the heart of the Omani Mountain Destination, with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning spearheading efforts to engage local stakeholders and prioritize community needs. Through legislative reforms and targeted employment initiatives, the project seeks to empower Omani residents and foster equitable economic growth.
As Oman charts a course towards Vision 2040, the Omani Mountain Destination stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to sustainable development and cultural preservation. With a bold vision for the future, Oman aims to redefine luxury tourism, offering visitors an unparalleled blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and ecological responsibility.
