Emerging from the landscape like a colossal boulder rising from an artificial sand dune, the extraordinary Silt Tower in Middelkerke, Belgium, is a remarkable feat of design and engineering that harmoniously blends coastal protection with architectural ingenuity.

Conceived by the visionary minds at ZJA, this impressive structure draws inspiration from the Belgian coastal landscape, paying homage to the Testerep – an island that once existed near Middelkerke’s shores during the Middle Ages, eventually becoming connected to the mainland through embankments and sea defenses over time.

First unveiled in 2020, the Silt Tower is a testament to mankind’s resilience against the relentless forces of nature, engineered to withstand the harsh beatings of rising seas and extreme storms that increasingly threaten coastal communities.

“The essence of the design lies in the integration of all the significant aspects, from the experience of the public to coastal reinforcement and economic impetus,” explained ZJA. “With the once bleak Epernay Square as its center, the sea embankment and coastal defenses are now fused together, and an extensive new experiential landscape has arisen.”

At its heart, the Silt Tower is a multifaceted wonder, seamlessly merging public spaces, coastal reinforcement, and economic revitalization. The artificial dune base expands into a public square, offering stunning vistas of the coastline, while the dune-like building itself houses a casino, restaurant, and event spaces. Atop this monumental foundation stands a towering structure hosting hotel rooms, its latticed beams of Accoya engineered wood enveloping a glass and concrete core.

“Underground parking ensures that is a car-free zone, giving full scope to the public space above,” ZJA elaborated. “The ground level is thus dedicated as a public space. Marram grass, the dune basin, and sand channels leading to the beach give back to Middelkerke the characteristic landscape it holds dear. The climb to the top of the new dune offers breathtaking views and becomes a tourist attraction in its own right.”

Beyond its aesthetic and functional merits, the Silt Tower boasts a robust and resilient design, with a chunky concrete base and integrated lighting that allows it to glow like a beacon in the night. Its sturdy construction, including a massive sea wall, equips it to withstand even the most extreme climatic conditions, capable of enduring a once-in-a-thousand-year storm.
