In a groundbreaking collaboration, robotics firm Apptronik and automotive giant Mercedes-Benz have inked a deal that will see the deployment of Apptronik’s cutting-edge humanoid robots, named Apollo, within Mercedes-Benz’s manufacturing facilities. The introduction of Apollo marks a significant stride in the automation of laborious and hazardous tasks within the automotive production line.
Unveiled by Apptronik in 2023, Apollo stands as a testament to the fusion of artificial intelligence and robotics, designed to alleviate humans from physically demanding and repetitive tasks. Today, a cohort of Apollo robots is primed to integrate seamlessly into Mercedes-Benz’s assembly line, aiding in tasks ranging from the delivery of assembly kits to the inspection of vehicle components.
According to Apptronik, the deployment of humanoid robots like Apollo represents a pivotal shift towards automating tasks that are increasingly challenging to assign to human workers due to their repetitive nature and physical demands.
As Jeff Cardenas, co-founder and CEO of Apollo, envisions, Mercedes-Benz’s adoption of robotics signals a blueprint for other enterprises to follow suit, paving the way for a future where robots undertake low-skill, physically taxing, and manual labor. Standing at a human-sized stature of around five feet, eight inches and weighing approximately 160 pounds, Apollo possesses the capacity to lift objects weighing up to 55 pounds, thereby augmenting human capabilities within industrial settings.
Jörg Burzer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, emphasizes the strategic significance of integrating robotics and artificial intelligence into the manufacturing process. Burzer envisions these advancements as instrumental in not only addressing labor gaps but also in liberating skilled workers to focus on crafting top-tier vehicles.
Meanwhile, Apptronik’s collaboration with NVIDIA aims to propel humanoid robot technology to new heights. Through NVIDIA’s Project GR00T, Apollo is poised to acquire the ability to learn complex tasks swiftly from human demonstrations, thereby enhancing its adaptability and problem-solving prowess.
With NVIDIA’s cutting-edge modules integrated into Apollo’s computing system, the humanoid robot gains the capacity to learn from various stimuli, including text, video, and human actions. This collaboration seeks to empower Apollo to recognize its surroundings and make informed decisions, transcending mere replication of predefined actions.
