LEGO enthusiasts and Lord of the Rings fans alike have reason to be happy with the unveiling of the new LEGO set inspired by Barad-dûr, Sauron’s formidable stronghold. Made up of an impressive 5,471 pieces, this set brings to life the ominous tower crowned with the ever-watchful Eye of Sauron, a chilling reminder of his malevolent presence. Movie aficionados will immediately recall it as the towering edifice with the fiery gaze, a defining symbol of darkness in Middle-earth.
Due to be released on June 1 for LEGO Insiders and June 4 for general buyers, this costs $500. The Barad-dûr tower is divided into four distinct sections – a dungeon, armory, throne chamber, and even a kitchen. Early birds who get the set by June 7 will also receive a complimentary 269-piece Fell beast set, complete with posable wings for the menacing flying creature and a Nazgûl minifigure.
Crafted by LEGO Ideas, the towering Barad-dûr stands at an height of 32.5 inches and spans 11 inches in width. Jumping into the interior, enthusiasts will discover a treasure trove of movie references cleverly tucked away as Easter Eggs. The minifigure roster includes iconic characters such as Sauron, the Mouth of Sauron, Samwise Gamgee, Gothmog, and various Orcs, adding depth to the build.
Each section of the set boasts intricate details, from mechanically operated front doors to a hidden Palantir chamber concealed behind the dark throne. Highlights include a weapon smithy for forging implements of destruction, a lava pit adorned with a suspended skeleton cage, and a feast hall for raucous orc gatherings. The tower’s summit reveals a concealed throne room with a secret map and ladder leading to the uppermost level. At the tower’s base, a functional door adds to the immersive experience.
Not forgetting key elements of the saga, the set includes nods to Frodo with the stolen Mithril coat and a hidden map, while Shelob is represented by a miniature spider. A notable feature is the modularity of the set, allowing for additional stacking to elevate the tower to even greater heights, surpassing even the Rivendell set in stature. Completing the ensemble, a replica of the Eye of Sauron crowns the tower, featuring a light-up brick to emanate a subtle glow, casting an eerie ambiance in any display space.
