You’ve definitely clocked Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer’s iconic ‘Girl With a Pearl Earring’ painting before. That chiaroscuro stunner with the dramatic lighting and mysterious muse has joined the hall of fame alongside works like the Mona Lisa and The Scream.
Well, now you can recreate that 17th century masterpiece from 1665 in brick form, thanks to this amazingly detailed LEGO set designed by builder ‘alanboar’.
Using a staggering 1,619 pieces, this incredible fan-made model captures the famous portrait in all its glory. The blue turban, the contemplative gaze, that showstopping pearl earring – it’s all been faithfully recreated with those iconic studded bricks.
Of course, LEGO can’t quite nail all the finer details. But that’s half the charm of this chunky piece of brick-based art. The mosaic approach using LEGO’s specialty art bricks sidesteps those pesky studs to conjure up a smooth, textured finish.
Measuring a hugely impressive 17.6 x 15.1 inches, this set even comes framed in baroque-inspired surroundings to add to the authenticity. Not sure if LEGO makes actual hemispherical silver bricks for the earring though – this artist may have taken a few creative liberties there!
As well as the large-scale recreation, you also get a Vermeer mini-figure and a teeny tiny version of the painting on its own dinky podium – adorable!
Sadly, this ‘Girl With a Pearl Earring’ LEGO set is still just a fan submission on the LEGO Ideas site. But you can defo show your approval by voting for this MOC (My Own Creation) over on the website. Maybe we’ll get to build our own little Vermeer very soon!
