In the heart of Miami’s vibrant Design District, a new landmark is set to emerge, courtesy of the renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. The MIRAI Design District, Kuma’s first mixed-use project in the United States, promises to be a bustling lifestyle hub that fuses the elegance of Japanese design with the tropical allure of the Floridian city.

Scheduled to break ground in the summer of 2024, the 65,000-square-foot development will comprise 17 retail units on the ground floor, with commercial office spaces above, each meticulously curated to allow luxury brands and businesses to retain their distinct identities within the wider scheme.

Kuma’s approach to the design seeks to intertwine cultural influences, architecture, and nature, creating a harmonious blend of old-world charm and modern sensibilities. Greenscapes, envisioned by the landscape architecture firm Island Planning Corporation, play a pivotal role in the district, forming a living rooftop and dotting the pedestrian passages and circulation between units.

The project’s name, MIRAI, which means “the distant future” in Japanese, nods to the innovative nature of the development, which seamlessly weaves tech-savvy and sustainable features alongside glimpses of nature. The design fuses influences from both Japanese aesthetics and Florida’s local tropical landscapes, creating a lush central garden that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant social and cultural scene.
