Immersed Visor: A Challenger to Apple’s Vision Pro

One contender vying for the mixed reality spotlight is the Visor headset, flaunting aspirations to outshine the Vision Pro with a more open platform, a sleeker design, and a notably more budget-friendly price point.

Designed by Immersed, the Visor, despite its spectacle-like appearance, deviates from the conventional mixed reality headset aesthetic. While the Vision Pro prioritizes style, the Visor mirrors its namesake and incorporates 4K micro OLED displays per eye, a substantial improvement over its Apple counterpart. Remarkably, the Visor manages to weigh a mere 200g, less than half of the Meta Quest 3, thanks in part to an external battery.

Distinguishing itself further from the competition, the Visor offers a unique user experience. Instead of operating on its proprietary system or merely mirroring a computer screen, it leverages Immersed’s extensively developed mixed reality software. This software creates virtual monitors seamlessly integrated into the user’s field of vision, providing a broader perspective than traditional smart glasses implementations.

The Visor’s advantage extends to compatibility, allowing users to continue using familiar software and operating systems without restrictions. Immersed even assures users that attempts to integrate SteamVR with its device won’t be hindered. Despite lacking an app marketplace, the Visor plans to release development tools for sideloading apps in the future.

However, the seemingly enticing $399.99 price tag of the Visor comes with a caveat. This figure requires the additional purchase of a “Membership Plus” subscription, priced at $59.99 per month for 12 months or $39.99 for 24 months. The silver lining is that access to basic features persists even if the subscription isn’t renewed. Alternatively, users can opt for the device alone at $999.99, still significantly more affordable than Apple’s Vision Pro. The efficacy of these promises remains to be seen, pun unintended, as the device undergoes scrutiny over time.
