If you’re tired of seeing ads clutter your Facebook feed while using your iPhone, you’re not alone. While Facebook is a free platform that relies heavily on advertising, there are ways to reduce, manage, and in some cases nearly eliminate the ads you see. Here’s a guide on how to take control of your Facebook experience on your iPhone.
1. Use Facebook’s Ad Preferences to Customize What You See
Facebook allows you to control some of the ads you encounter by adjusting your Ad Preferences. Here’s how:
-
Open the Facebook app on your iPhone.
-
Tap on the Menu (the three horizontal lines).
-
Go to Settings & Privacy > Settings.
-
Scroll down and select Ads under “Permissions.”
-
Tap on Ad Preferences.
-
Here, you can:
-
Manage Interests: Remove topics you don’t want ads about.
-
Manage Advertisers: Hide ads from specific companies.
-
Ad Settings: Turn off “Ads based on data from partners” and “Ads based on your activity on Facebook Company Products.”
-
This won’t stop all ads, but it will make them less annoying and more relevant.
2. Hide Specific Ads
You can directly hide ads you don’t want to see:
-
When you see an ad, tap the three dots (•••) next to it.
-
Choose Hide Ad.
-
You can also choose Why am I seeing this ad? to understand and further manage similar ads.
3. Turn Off Off-Facebook Activity
Facebook tracks your activity even when you’re not on the app to show you targeted ads. You can limit this:
-
Open Settings > Settings & Privacy > Settings.
-
Scroll to Your Facebook Information > Off-Facebook Activity.
-
Tap Clear History to disconnect past data.
-
Then, tap Manage Future Activity and turn it Off.
4. Use Content Blockers in Safari
If you browse Facebook via Safari on your iPhone, you can install content blocker apps like:
-
AdGuard
-
1Blocker
-
Wipr
These apps block many ads and trackers, including Facebook’s on web pages. Simply:
-
Download a content blocker from the App Store.
-
Go to Settings > Safari > Extensions > Content Blockers and enable the app.
Note: This won’t block ads inside the Facebook app, only on the web version.
5. Consider Using an Ad-Free Facebook Alternative
Some users access Facebook through third-party apps or browsers that attempt to minimize ads. However, these often have limited features and may violate Facebook’s terms of service, so proceed cautiously.
6. Try Facebook Premium (If Available)
Facebook has been testing ad-free subscription options in some countries (especially in the EU) to comply with regulations. If Facebook Premium becomes available in your region:
-
You might be able to pay a monthly fee to browse Facebook and Instagram without ads.
-
Keep an eye on Facebook’s announcements for your area.
7. Limit App Tracking on Your iPhone
Since iOS 14.5, Apple has allowed users to ask apps not to track them:
-
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
-
Turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track.
-
Specifically deny Facebook’s tracking when prompted.
This reduces the amount of data Facebook collects from other apps, resulting in fewer targeted ads.
While you can’t completely remove all Facebook ads without stopping use of the platform or paying for an ad-free version (if available), you can make them less intrusive and better suited to your interests. A combination of adjusting your ad preferences, limiting tracking, and using content blockers will greatly improve your Facebook experience on your iPhone.
