In a groundbreaking exploration of mobile living, DDAA architect Daisuke Motogi introduces “NOT A HOTEL ANYWHERE,” a revolutionary concept that transforms vintage Airstream and Spartan camping trailers into five distinct, rentable vehicles, each serving a unique purpose. Departing from conventional mobile housing projects, Motogi disperses various amenities across the trailers, offering guests a more immersive and adaptable experience. The architect emphasizes the importance of avoiding overcrowding within limited spaces and provides guests with the freedom to choose trailers based on their individual preferences.

True to its name, “NOT A HOTEL” rejects a fixed location, encouraging guests to appreciate diverse landscapes and surroundings. The project repurposes two spacious Spartan vehicles and three Airstream trailers, meticulously renovated into discreetly luxurious havens. Each mobile unit boasts specific functions, including a bath, kitchen, ‘snack bar,’ two private bedrooms, and a study. The outdoor living area, defined by tarps between the trailers, adapts seamlessly to different environments, creating a flexible and spacious communal space.

DDAA encountered challenges in accommodating varying occupant numbers, prompting the team to design units capable of comfortably hosting three families with eight members each. Considering the potential for off-grid living, Motogi implemented a system allowing temporary connection to existing infrastructure. Currently stationed in Aoshima, Miyazaki Prefecture, the units maintain off-grid compatibility, with future plans to rent units in different combinations. However, road limitations due to the length of the Spartan trailers necessitate well-maintained travel routes.

To preserve the vintage trailer aesthetic, essential functions were strategically placed in the lower section, minimizing interference with windows and keeping functional volumes below waist level. Exterior modifications focused on waterproofing, maintaining the original texture of the vintage trailers. Notably, at the client’s request, a sunakku—a traditional Japanese hostess bar—was added, featuring high-end materials, velvet upholstered stools, and a karaoke monitor to evoke an authentic atmosphere.

The trailer structures, supported by chassis made from steel square pipes, required meticulous attention to detail due to variations in window positions and specifications. Concerns about leaks led to the resealing of rivets after a sprinkler test, preserving the vintage exterior while undergoing significant interior renovations. Practical considerations, such as meeting road legality requirements and camouflaging wheelhouses, were addressed, and thermal insulation was enhanced using glass wool and flexible PE foam.

As “NOT A HOTEL ANYWHERE” continues to evolve, DDAA plans to enhance insulation and features, solidifying its position at the forefront of the mobile living revolution.
