For children without sight, the wondrous worlds portrayed in storybooks can prove a significant challenge to visualise. While sighted children can conjure imagery through illustrations, those with visual impairments must rely on the descriptive powers of words alone to forge mental pictures. It’s a barrier that can discourage literary engagement from an early age.
A team of Korean designers has crafted an ingenious solution: bbook, a concept for an electronic 3D book that brings fantastical tales literally to life through tactile, shapeshifting pages.
Central to the design is a fabric-based display capable of dynamically rendering three-dimensional objects and scenery as each story unfolds. The soft malleable surface elevates and contours to form recognisable shapes – be it a wicked queen’s poisoned apple, Cinderella’s glass slipper or the big bad wolf itself. With each pivotal narrative moment, the book’s scenery is resculpted through this haptic canvas.
Complementing the tactile storytelling is an array of accessibility features tailored for the vision-impaired. An audio narration reads out the text, with chunky tactile buttons allowing easy navigation. Meanwhile, an adjacent surface presents the prose in refreshable Braille, with elevated dots rising and falling in sync.
Such multisensory stimulation serves not just to make literature more engaging, but enhances educational value too. By associating descriptive words with distinct physical forms, bbook nurtures crucial cognitive connections that can boost literary comprehension.
The considered design extends to bbook’s physical form. Each individual story is contained on detachable data modules akin to USB sticks, allowing tales to be swapped in and out with ease. Even the device’s charging indicators are rendered through elevating pips rather than inscrutable LEDs.
In bringing an unprecedented tangibility to the worlds of make-believe, bbook demonstrates how innovative design can tear down barriers to recreating the magical shared experience of being swept away by a favourite story. It’s an enchanting concept that could embolden a love of reading from the most formative years.
