Break out the confetti cannons because Xiaomi has just rolled into the automotive scene with its latest creation, the Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill car; it’s a gadget on wheels, a tech marvel that’s set to disrupt the automotive landscape.
First things first, this EV powerhouse boasts an 875 V charging system and rocks a 101 kWh battery, courtesy of CATL cells. Buckle up because this electric marvel can stretch its legs for a whopping 800 km on a single charge. The AWD version is a speed demon, pumping out 475 kW, launching from 0-100 km/h in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it 2.78 seconds, with a top speed of 265 km/h.
Now, rewind the clock back three years to 2021 when Xiaomi’s CEO, Lei Jun, dropped the bombshell that Xiaomi was diving headfirst into the car manufacturing business. Fast forward 1003 days, and here we are with the SU7 taking center stage. Lei Jun spent a marathon three hours on stage, divulging every detail of Xiaomi’s journey into the EV realm.
Spy shots, leaked videos, and a dash of anticipation set the stage before the official reveal. In a strategic move, Xiaomi pulled the curtain back on not one but two versions of the SU7: the base SU7 and the performance-driven SU7 Max.
The SU7’s RWD base model, with its in-house V6 engine, packs a punch with 220 kW and 400 Nm torque. It hits 0-100 km/h in 5.28 seconds and flaunts a battery with a 73.6 kWh capacity, boasting a range of 668 km under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle.
If you’re craving more adrenaline, feast your eyes on the SU7 Max. This AWD beast unleashes a dual-motor fury with 425 kW and 838 Nm torque. The numbers? 0-100 km/h in 2.78 seconds, a top speed of 265 km/h, and 0-200 km/h in a breathtaking 10.67 seconds. The CATL’s Qilin NMC battery, a colossal 101 kWh, propels it to an 800 km CLTC range.
But that’s not all – the SU7 charges like a superhero. Forget pit stops; in just 10 minutes, it slurps up 390 km of range. Take a breather, and in 5 minutes, you’ve got an extra 220 km. Blink and you’ll miss it, but in 15 minutes, it guzzles down a staggering 510 km.
Xiaomi, known for its sleek designs, doesn’t disappoint. With a drag coefficient of 0.195 Cd, the SU7 is a wind-cheating marvel. Lei Jun proudly showcased the lidar on top of the windshield, inspired by the smooth design of a pebble, but wait – the 0.195 Cd champ in the video doesn’t have the lidar.
Sporting Xiaomi’s Modena platform, the SU7 stands taller and longer than the Porsche Taycan. Dimensions? 4997/1963/1455 mm (L/W/H) with a generous wheelbase of 3000 mm. It’s got a frunk big enough to throw a party in – a whopping 105 liters – and a 517-liter boot space.
The brains behind this beauty hail from Xiaomi’s dream team. Head of Design, Li Tianyuan, and exterior designer, James Qiu, brought their A-game after stints at BMW and Mercedes-Benz, respectively.
Step inside, and you’re greeted by a 16.1″ central control screen, a 7.1″ instrument panel, and rear passenger screens doubling as Xiaomi tablets. The HyperOS, powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295, runs the show, while Xiaomi Pilot, with Nvidia Orin-X chips, takes care of the ADAS.
But here’s the kicker – Xiaomi isn’t just launching a car; they’re revolutionizing the tech ecosystem. HyperOS, the successor to MIUI, extends its tentacles to all things Xiaomi, promising unparalleled connectivity. Mirror your phone or tablet, sync with Mi Watch, Mi Band, and Mi Home devices – they’ve got it all covered.
Xiaomi’s grand ambitions don’t stop here. CEO Lei Jun dropped the bombshell – they’re gunning for the top 5 car companies worldwide in the next 15-20 years. The SU7 is set to lock horns with Porsche Taycan and Tesla Model S in China, but mum’s the word on the price. Lei Jun’s only hint? It won’t be 140,000 yuan; give some respect for the tech.
While the price remains a mystery, speculations suggest the base model could kick off at under 300,000 yuan. When will it hit the streets? Mass production is slated for H1 2024, according to Lei Jun. So, buckle up, folks – the Xiaomi SU7 is ready to race into the future!
