In the TWIKE 5, a futuristic three-wheel electric vehicle, there’s no steering wheel. Instead, drivers use pedals and side-mounted ‘joysticks’ to navigate, giving the vehicle a unique, game-like driving experience. With two wheels at the back and a single front wheel controlled by the joysticks, drivers can steer with either hand, although using both is recommended for stability.
The TWIKE 5’s joystick system mimics traditional steering: push the left joystick forward to turn left and the right one to turn right. This design maintains stability even on sharp turns and bumpy roads, offering a familiar feel despite the unconventional setup.
Unlike its predecessor, the TWIKE 3, which reaches 85 km/h, the TWIKE 5 can go up to 190 km/h and has more power. Both models can carry two passengers and have electric drives with pedal assistance and side stick steering, though the TWIKE 5 is more like a city car compared to the airplane-like front of the TWIKE 3.
What makes the TWIKE 5 unique is its combination of an electric motor and pedal drive, a first in the automotive world. This setup allows the vehicle to work like a moving stationary bike, where pedaling reduces the workload on the electric motor, extending battery life and range. However, the pedals assist the electric motor rather than replacing it.
The joysticks have buttons for essential controls like turn signals, lights, and the horn, making it easy for the driver to manage these functions. When not steering, the TWIKE 5 drives straight like a regular car.
In October 2023, TWIKE finished a test version of the TWIKE 5, known as the driver evaluation vehicle (FET). This prototype includes the frame, suspension, electric motor, and software, undergoing rigorous testing to improve its performance and design.
Production of the TWIKE 5 is set to start in 2024, with 500 units planned. Prospective buyers can reserve a spot on the TWIKE website, entering a ‘ranking’ system to determine the first 500 recipients. Those who miss out can pre-order the next model, TWIKE 6. The company has not yet announced the official release date, sale date, or pricing details.
