The new Audi A5 has been unveiled as a significant evolution in Audi’s mid-size luxury segment, replacing the outgoing A4 model. This change is part of Audi’s new branding strategy, where combustion engine vehicles take odd numbers and electric vehicles even numbers.
The 2024 Audi A5 introduces the new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), marking a departure from the 17-year-old MLB architecture used in the current A4. This new platform is designed to better accommodate various electrified powertrains while maintaining Audi’s traditional longitudinal engine layout.
In terms of design, the new A5 showcases an evolutionary look that aligns with Audi’s recent design language. The vehicle will be available in both sedan and Avant (estate) body styles, reflecting the sporty essence of Audi’s design philosophy. However, it’s worth noting that Audi has confirmed there will be no coupé or cabriolet versions of the new A5.
The A5’s powertrain options include:
– Pure ICE engines: Two versions of the EA888 turbo petrol four-cylinder engine, offering 148bhp or 201bhp
– Diesel option: A modified 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine with the new MHEV Plus system, producing 201bhp
– Range-topping S5: A 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine with 362bhp, featuring a variable-geometry turbocharger and the MHEV Plus systemThe MHEV Plus system is a notable innovation, utilizing two motor-generators for improved efficiency and regenerative braking. This system is claimed to reduce CO2 emissions by 10g/km in the diesel variant.
Inside the vehicle, Audi has implemented a new design language that creates a generous feeling of space and features a digital-focused dashboard. The new operating concept aims to enhance interaction between the driver and the vehicle.
Audi is also emphasizing sustainability in the production of the new A5. The company aims to achieve net carbon-neutral manufacturing for all models produced at the Neckarsulm site from 2025, in line with their “360factory” production strategy.
The new Audi A5 represents a significant step forward for the brand, combining modern sportiness with premium proportions and advanced technology. It aims to continue Audi’s success in the mid-size luxury segment while adapting to changing market demands and environmental considerations.
