In an exciting move for gaming enthusiasts, Sony has officially introduced a pair of new PlayStation 5 models that are bound to earn the moniker ‘PS5 Slim’ among fans. While retaining the formidable horsepower of their predecessors, these fresh iterations flaunt a more compact form factor and feature an innovative attachable disc drive, accompanied by a capacious 1TB SSD. This detachable drive concept opens up a world of possibilities for gamers, as it enables the purchase of the Digital Edition and offers the option to later incorporate the drive as an affordable $80 modular accessory.
Sony’s latest announcement was made through an official blog post, where they expressed their commitment to adapting to the ever-evolving needs of gamers. The company stated, “To address the evolving needs of players, our engineering and design teams collaborated on a new form factor that provides greater choice and flexibility. The same technology features that make PS5 the best to play are packed into a smaller form factor, along with an attachable Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for more internal storage.”
The revamped PS5 boasts a 30 percent reduction in volume, offering a more streamlined and space-saving gaming experience. Moreover, these models are impressively 18 to 24 percent lighter than their predecessors. Sony has taken a stylish approach to the design, incorporating four distinct cover panels – a glossy top complemented by matte sides. Both variants come complete with a horizontal stand, while a dedicated vertical stand, compatible with all PS5 models, will be available separately for $30.
However, the convenience of ‘buy now, add a drive later’ does come at a slightly higher price point. The Digital Edition is priced at $450, while the model equipped with the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc drive will set you back $500. Gaming enthusiasts in the United States can expect these new PS5s to start shipping in November, with select retailers offering them initially. Sony has also assured a global rollout in the subsequent months. Additionally, the company clarified that once the existing PS5 model sells out, it will be phased out, making way for this exciting new era of gaming hardware.
