In a world first, the august Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin has unveiled a timepiece that doubles as a wearable perfume. The Égérie – The Pleats of Time is a breathtakingly intricate fusion of haute horlogerie, haute couture, and haute parfumerie.
The one-of-a-kind watch is the result of an unlikely collaboration between Vacheron Constantin, Parisian fashion designer Yiqing Yin, and master perfumer Dominique Ropion. Yin has crafted a lilac strap adorned with delicate pleats and intricate embroidery, into which Ropion’s bespoke fragrance of lavender and orange blossom has been discreetly infused.
As the wearer’s wrist moves, the scent is subtly released, creating an ephemeral danse between time and scent. “It’s about accepting the passage of time in order to breathe and be receptive to wonder,” muses Yin.
The 37mm pink gold case, set with diamonds, frames a dial untethered from traditional markers. Instead, undulating pleats unfurl across its expanse like waves frozen in motion, encouraging a more intuitive relationship with the hours.
For Ropion, the challenge was “creating a fragrance that would be universal, like time itself” – a mineral scent with powdery, iridescent notes that capture light like a prism.
In an ingenious feat, the perfume concentrate was encapsulated in nanocapsules before being embedded into each component of the strap during its construction. With every graze of skin, another whisper of fragrance is released.
Completing this ode to ephemerality is a matching haute couture gown, its diaphanous skirt swirling with sunburst pleats of iridescent satin and silk chiffon. “This creation celebrates movement’s inherent beauty,” reflects Yin, “where infinity is gracefully reflected in fluidity.”
In our modern era of sanitized, mass-produced luxury, the Égérie is an intoxicating breath of singular elegance – a fleeting masterwork to be savoured one moment at a time.
