Three-wheeled electric vehicles are a practical option for city driving, offering safety advantages over two-wheelers. However, they have their challenges, like the risk of toppling if driven recklessly.

The French nonprofit SIREMS Association has developed a safe three-wheeled electric vehicle with advanced features to prevent accidents. The vehicle has two rear wheels for better traction and a design that shifts the center of gravity to improve torque.

To enhance safety during high-speed cornering, the rear wheels tilt with the body’s lean. Mobile Lateral Elements (MLEs) on each side of the front wheel help prevent toppling by balancing the wheels. In case of excessive speed, the MLEs stabilize the vehicle.

The MLEs also improve collision safety by absorbing frontal impacts. A Programmed Restraint Device (PRD) behind the cockpit dissipates collision energy and prevents the rider from being ejected. The vehicle’s crumple zones double as storage space. In a rear impact, the wheels detach, and the frame disintegrates to protect the driver.

Philippe Girardi, the founder of SIREMS Association, plans to have a prototype for testing by the end of 2024, with the vehicle expected to be on the roads by 2028, priced at around $32,500.
