Amidst the Paris Fashion Week fervor, Acne Studios once again sets the bar high with their FW24 presentation, where attention was riveted on Estonian artist Villu Jaanisoo’s avant-garde creations. Departing from their previous SS23 disco ball spectacle, this season’s show unveiled two imposing sculptures fashioned from repurposed rubber tires, courtesy of Jaanisoo’s ingenuity.
These tire sculptures, resembling oversized armchairs, commanded the stage, offering a thought-provoking juxtaposition against the backdrop of Acne Studios’ garment collection. Designed to evoke the silhouette of the human body, these industrial marvels added depth to the overarching theme of resilience and form embodied by the showcased attire.
Jaanisoo’s recycled rubber masterpieces not only served as visual focal points but also provided seating arrangements for attendees, seamlessly merging art and functionality. Their dark, glossy finish stood in stark contrast to the pristine white surroundings, infusing the space with a minimalist yet commanding aura.
Speaking on his creative process, Jaanisoo reflects on the inherent challenges of working with tires, noting their symbolic resistance that imbues each sculpture with a dynamic, almost baroque quality. His tire sculptures resonated harmoniously with Acne Studios’ futuristic garment collection, characterized by molded leather and denim pieces exuding a raw, mechanical allure.
Jonny Johansson, the visionary behind Acne Studios’ creative direction, elucidates on the enduring appeal of leather and denim, staples that have defined the brand’s ethos since its inception. For Johansson, these materials transcend mere fashion; they symbolize empowerment and resilience, drawing inspiration from diverse subcultural movements spanning punk to S&M.
In essence, Acne Studios’ FW24 showcase emerges as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between art and fashion, where Jaanisoo’s tire sculptures serve as not just set pieces but integral elements in a narrative of strength, innovation, and timeless style.
