For those not among the cohort of American TikTok aficionados whose daily musings delve into the annals of the Roman Empire, the Panthevm Roma is poised to transport you to that realm. Drawing inspiration from the enduring architectural finesse of the Pantheon dome, this timepiece boasts a mesmerizing 3D dial, intricately adorned with the radial design reminiscent of the dome’s underbelly, erected in the year 125 AD.
Crafted by designer Panthevm, the Roma watch pays homage to the Pantheon in Rome, whose colossal dome spans 142 feet in diameter and stands at a towering 71 feet. A marvel that claimed the title of the world’s largest dome for 1,300 years, it remains an unparalleled feat as the largest unreinforced concrete dome globally. The secret to its structural prowess lies in a calculated construction, employing weightier materials like travertine at the dome’s base and porous volcanic rock aloft. The iconic oculus, a 27-foot-wide aperture at its zenith, bathes the chamber in natural light, accentuating the pockets within the dome’s radial inner concavity—a feature meticulously transposed onto the Panthevm Roma’s dial, where the watch hands originate from the very oculus.
The Roma collection exudes a timeless allure, seamlessly marrying classic design with the enduring charm of Italian aesthetics. Much like the coexistence and synergy of Italian architecture and automobiles on the lively streets of Rome, the Roma watch encapsulates a fusion of historical essence and contemporary flair.
Forged from resilient 316L Stainless Steel, the Roma watch showcases its central 3D dial, encircled by linear markings adorned with Superluminova, including the hour and minute hands. While a slight quirk emerges with the misalignment of the date window at 3 o’clock vis-Ã -vis the Pantheon dome design, this remains a minor hiccup in an otherwise refined timepiece. Topping it off, a sapphire crystal safeguards the watch, affording a crystal-clear view of the dial and endowing the Roma with a robust 20ATM water resistance.
Despite its unabashedly Roman aesthetic—underscored by Pantheon detailing, Roman numerals, and Latin-styled “Panthevm”—the beating heart within is distinctly Japanese. Beneath the surface lies the Seiko Automatic movement, a 24-jewel marvel with a commendable 41-hour power reserve.
Originally unveiled on Kickstarter and Indiegogo in 2020, the Roma watch debuted in five distinct color variants. Enthusiasts can further personalize their timepiece by selecting from metal, leather, or rubber straps, completing the synthesis of historical reverence and contemporary elegance.
