In 2022, many Iranian students and entrepreneurs showed interest in moving abroad for better opportunities. A new bag called Olka, meaning “homeland” in Persian, was created to symbolize this journey. It represents the struggles and growth experienced by young Iranians seeking a better life overseas. The design of Olka reflects this journey, with each part representing progress and beauty emerging from challenges.
The designer, Maryam Hosseini, addressed a common issue with leather products by creating Olka without traditional stitches. Instead, a modular interlocking system was used for durability and easier production. This design allows damaged parts to be easily replaced, promoting sustainability in fashion.
Olka stands out for its consumer-centric approach. It consists of 72 cow leather pieces designed in 2D and 3D, cut precisely with laser technology. Customers can order separate components and assemble the bag themselves, fostering a personal connection and sense of ownership.
Another feature of Olka is an inner bag made from cow leather, which can be used separately as a crossbody bag. This dual functionality caters to different needs and occasions.
Extensive research was conducted during the creation of Olka, focusing on interlocking systems, modular design, consumer behavior, and DIY trends. This ensured that Olka resonated with its target audience. Overcoming challenges in component strength and user-friendly assembly highlighted the innovation and expertise behind Olka.
