Just months after its debut, MSI is unveiling the next version of its handheld gaming PC, the Claw, at Computex 2024. The updated model, called the Claw 8 AI+, has undergone a hardware overhaul to fix the issues of its predecessor. The design remains mostly the same, but the Claw 8 AI+ now has a sleek gray body that highlights the controls better, a larger screen, and a more comfortable ergonomic design.

MSI is keeping details of the Lunar Lake CPU under wraps, but confirms the presence of the next-gen Intel chip. It comes with up to 32GB of fast LPDDR5x RAM and a 1TB SSD. The storage, an M.2 2280 SSD, is similar to the ASUS ROG Ally X, making upgrades easier.

Apart from the internals, the Claw 8 AI+ has a redesigned chassis that seems more comfortable to hold than the original Claw. The device, displayed behind glass, boasts a larger 8-inch screen with a 1080p resolution and a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Dual Thunderbolt ports offer versatility for external displays and high-speed peripherals.

Battery life was a big issue with the original Claw, but MSI has upgraded the 8 AI+ with an 80-watt-hour battery, matching the ROG Ally X and significantly improving upon the original’s 53-watt-hour unit. This quick upgrade shows MSI’s commitment to the handheld gaming market. They also promise ongoing support for the original Claw, including recent driver updates.

The success of the Claw 8 AI+ depends on the performance of the Lunar Lake CPU. Intel promotes its “radical low-power architecture” suitable for handheld devices, with enhanced integrated graphics powered by their Battlemage architecture. While details are scarce, the potential for efficient performance and impressive visuals is promising.

The original Claw’s issues with the Meteor Lake CPU are a cautionary tale. MSI’s choice of CPU limited performance compared to other manufacturers who opted for AMD processors. The hope is that the combination of Lunar Lake and the Claw 8 AI+ will be more successful.

Pricing details are unknown, but a September launch is expected. The final design may have slight changes from the prototype at Computex, and a possible price drop for the original Claw is also hinted.
