After 45 years of gas-guzzling glory, Mercedes-Benz has finally electrified its iconic G-Class off-roader with the launch of the new EQG 580. Retaining the classic ladder frame chassis and independent front suspension of its combustion-engined forebears, the all-electric G-Class adds a host of cutting-edge features to bring Merc’s legendary off-road bruiser into the 21st century.
Chief among these is the battery pack, which is integrated directly into the ladder frame for a low center of gravity. Four individually controlled electric motors, one near each wheel, deliver a combined output of 432kW – enough to propel the EQG 580 to a top speed of 130km/h. But this is no mere road-going boulevardier – Mercedes has also equipped the electric G with a ‘LOW RANGE’ off-road gear reduction system, allowing it to tackle the toughest terrain with ease.
The EQG 580’s party piece, however, is its ability to turn on the spot thanks to this low-range system. Combine that with the vehicle’s stability on sideways slopes of up to 35 degrees, and you’ve got an off-roader that laughs in the face of even the most challenging obstacles. Subtle exterior tweaks, like the raised bonnet and air curtains in the rear wheel arches, add to the EQG’s visual drama.
Inside, the EQG 580 is packed with tech to make light work of the rough stuff. A camera system provides a 360-degree view of the vehicle’s surroundings, while an optional ‘transparent bonnet’ feature uses a combination of front and mirror-mounted cameras to create a virtual image of what’s directly in front of the car. Ideal for navigating steep inclines or avoiding unseen obstacles.
The EQG 580’s lighting is equally cutting-edge, with animated LED light bands on the grille and 84 individually adaptive MULTIBEAM LED headlights as standard. Keyless entry and start, wireless charging, and a dual-screen entertainment system for rear passengers add to the luxury feel.
For the first run, Mercedes is offering the EQG 580 in a limited-edition ‘Edition One’ guise, with five exclusive paint colors, blue brake calipers, and ‘Stronger Than Time’ projected onto the ground when you open the doors. Inside, there’s a mix of silver and black leather, blue stitching and carbon fiber trim.
With a starting price of around €192,524, the EQG 580 Edition One is no cheap thrill. But for those who want to combine the G-Class’s legendary off-road prowess with the latest in electric and autonomous tech, it could be the ultimate adventure vehicle. Just don’t expect to be able to buy one in a hurry – with production limited, these are sure to be as rare as hen’s teeth.
