Artificial intelligence is changing industries, so why should LEGO fans be left out? Dutch creator and YouTuber Sten, from the Creative Mindstorms channel, built a printing machine from LEGO bricks that turns any image into pixel art.
Sten’s latest creation, the Pixelbot 3000, shows his skills in LEGO building and AI. He documented the process on YouTube, showing how the Pixelbot 3000 uses AI to make pixel art from any image.
Programmed in Python with OpenAI’s DALL-E, the Pixelbot 3000 is simple to use: enter a subject, press start, and let the machine work. Inspired by other LEGO printers, Sten upgraded to a 32 x 32 grid for better results.
The Pixelbot 3000 works like a pick-and-place machine, putting large LEGO pieces on the grid. It picks colors from a 15-color palette due to LEGO’s limited colors.
Instead of scanning or designing, the Pixelbot 3000 uses AI to create pixel art directly. Users can preview, crop, and adjust colors before printing. The machine builds the art piece by piece, matching colors and positions.
In a test, Sten asked the AI to make a “quirky robot holding a sunflower.” The result, seen in his video, shows the impressive abilities of this AI-LEGO combo.
