KOSMOS Architects’ Multifunctional Wooden Furniture: The Versatile DICE

KOSMOS Architects has unveiled a revolutionary piece of furniture that redefines the concept of multifunctionality. The DICE, a wooden design object, seamlessly combines the functions of a stool, coffee table, bench, and lamp into a single, portable unit. This innovative creation was showcased during Milan Design Week 2024, captivating audiences with its ingenious design and practical applications.

The Dice Concept

The inspiration behind the DICE stems from the classic children’s toy, the dice. KOSMOS Architects was fascinated by the varying numbers and dots on the square toy, prompting them to transform the palm-sized cube into a real-life multifunctional wooden furniture piece. The user can rotate the DICE to access different functionalities, making it a truly versatile addition to any space.

Portable and Practical

One of the standout features of the DICE is its portability. With its lightweight design and compact size, the DICE can easily fit into a handbag, allowing users to take it with them on trips and excursions. The two round legs of the furniture provide stability when used as a stool, while the triangular support and pointed edges prevent it from rolling around when used as a table.

Sculpted by Robot Arm

KOSMOS Architects employed cutting-edge technology to create the DICE. Using KUKA robotics, a robot arm sculpted the multifunctional wooden furniture from warm oak, carving out a hollow space for the lamp component. The resulting piece was then meticulously ground and oiled by hand, ensuring a smooth and polished finish. The classic color of the wood allows the DICE to function as a sculptural element within any space.

A Collaboration with SAMPLE

The DICE was created as part of a special SAMPLE project, a collaboration between KOSMOS Architects and the Vaults Center for Artistic Production. The piece was recently exhibited at Milan Design Week 2024 as part of F/A (EXTRA)ORDINARY by the Fake/Authentic Gallery, hosted by DropCity at Via Sammartini in Milan. SAMPLE DESIGN is a curated selection of collectibles and studio designs, showcasing the work of architects, contemporary artisans, independent designers, and artists.
