FREITAG has taken a bold step forward with the introduction of its first circular backpack made entirely of nylon 6, a monomaterial that can be recycled repeatedly. This innovative design not only showcases the brand’s commitment to reducing waste but also highlights the potential for a more circular economy in the fashion industry.
Versatile and Robust Nylon 6
FREITAG has chosen nylon 6 as the material of choice for its circular backpack due to its versatility, robustness, and adaptability. This material, also known as polyamide 6, lends the backpack a water-repellent skin and a series of sturdy zippers, straps, labels, and sewing threads. By collaborating with a Taiwanese partner in the textile industry, FREITAG has developed a three-layer mono-material that is both water-repellent and durable.
Practical and Stylish Design
The design of the circular backpack, influenced by British designer Jeffrey Siu, pays homage to the bike culture that FREITAG is closely affiliated with. The backpack features a detachable musette bag, a small crossbody bag that can be worn separately or attached to the backpack as an additional outer pocket. The adjustable volume and flexible roll-top fastener allow users to adapt the space to their needs, while the additional compartments and padded back with a laptop compartment ensure practicality and comfort.
Recyclable and Reusable
FREITAG assures that its first circular backpack, named MONO[PA6], can be recycled almost instantly and infinitely. When the backpack is ultra-worn-out, users can ship it to FREITAG’s take-back service in Zurich, where it will be sent to the Institute for Materials Technology and Plastics Processing (IWK) in Rapperswil. The research and recycling partner will then shred the bag and process it into nylon granulate, which can be reused for new items, such as backpack components.
A Call for Circularity
FREITAG emphasizes that for circularity to work, users must use their products for a very long time, take good care of them, and repair them when necessary instead of buying new ones. The brand encourages users to return worn-out items to them to allow proper recycling and handling, preventing them from ending up in landfills.
As FREITAG launches its first circular and recyclable backpack, it sets a new standard for sustainability in the fashion industry. By creating a product that can be recycled repeatedly and encouraging users to embrace a more circular mindset, FREITAG is paving the way for the future.
