Situated near the Erez checkpoint on the border between Gaza and Israel, Studio Nab’s Domino concept proposes a symbolic three-kilometer circumference ring that serves as a platform for all countries to come together. This circular structure, located 90 kilometers from Jerusalem, aims to create a space for peace, dialogue, and mutual discovery, fostering fraternal collaboration between peoples and promoting the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
A Collaborative Effort
The Domino project is envisioned as a collaborative concept, financed by the international community, where each nation contributes to the building for the common good. The designer, Nicolas Abdelkader, describes it as “a peace memorial proposing the reconstruction of housing for Gazans and a space for diplomacy and cultural discovery.”
Interconnectedness and the Domino Effect
The concept of Domino is rooted in the idea of interconnectedness and the domino effect. Abdelkader states, “All interdependent and interconnected, we are all one. Peoples are pillars, like dominoes supporting the same home, our common home, the Earth. When a domino falls, a nation falls, people fall, and we all fall in an inexorable chain reaction.”
Promoting Peace and Understanding
The Domino platform is designed to house pavilions for all countries, providing spaces for commemoration, diplomacy, cultural discovery, and language learning. The goal is to organize fraternal collaboration between peoples and promote the peaceful resolution of conflicts, recognizing the value of each nation and facilitating coexistence through mutual understanding and acceptance.
Addressing Global Conflicts
Abdelkader’s commentary on the project reflects the urgency of addressing global conflicts, such as those in the Middle East, Ukraine, Haiti, and Sudan. He emphasizes the need to prioritize “weighting, justice, human rights, and negotiation” over the use of force, hostility, and violence, which only serve to escalate tensions and suffering.
A Call for International Solidarity
The Domino concept is a call for the international community to embrace a new system of international life that is stable, enviable, and sustainable. Abdelkader advocates for the development of a system of international solidarity, where economic and social progress are achieved through the recognition of the cultural and ethnic richness of each people, ultimately aspiring to the dignity of life, freedom, and the hope of concord and peace.
