Gather ’round as we take a journey through the annals of automotive nostalgia. In a world where the automotive landscape is awash with iconic legends that have come and gone, one car stands tall, defying the sands of time – the DeLorean DMC-12. This rear-engine two-passenger sports car burst onto the scene in the early 80s, injecting a futuristic flair into an era dominated by horsepower. However, despite its alluring exterior, it struggled to carve a niche in the fiercely competitive world of high-performance automobiles, primarily due to its rather underwhelming engine.
But fear not, fellow enthusiasts, for the DeLorean is set to make a triumphant return! After decades of anticipation, the company has resurrected this cult classic in an electrifying avatar, slated for production in 2024. This revival gives concept designers a golden opportunity to reimagine the DeLorean with a fresh, modern perspective.
Enter the visionary designer, Jeremy Dodd.
Feast your eyes on Jeremy’s imaginative creation, a concept that takes the DeLorean into uncharted territory. Behold, the DeLorean All Roader, an electric marvel that’s undergone a transformation to cater to the adventurous souls among us. Sporting a robust 4×4 drivetrain, it’s ready to tackle the rugged terrain with style, or so it would seem. The elevated ride height, however, might raise an eyebrow or two, casting doubts on its off-road prowess.
Jeremy’s ingenious redesign introduces roof rails, perfect for carrying your skis during those chilly winter escapades or hauling an assortment of adventure gear. The engine gracefully rests in the rear, while the front hood boasts ample storage space for all your luggage and travel essentials, leaving the interior free for relaxation when you’re parked. But the pièce de résistance is the rear windshield, which gracefully slopes down to accommodate an extra wheel carrier, injecting a dose of character into the DeLorean’s rear profile.
The front grille has received a modern facelift, adorned with sharp LED headlights, while the rear follows suit with lively taillights. The overall aesthetics, though sleek, are balanced by the understated elegance of a white paint job. Black rims provide a delightful contrast, but, as mentioned earlier, an increase in ride height with some sturdy dampers might be in order if you intend to conquer the roughest of roads.
In a world where the upcoming Alpha 5 boasts a boxy, contoured profile, the DeLorean All Roader remains true to its roots in a more subtle fashion. If given the choice, I’d opt for the personality and distinctiveness of the DeLorean over the predictable Alpha 5, which threatens to blend into the crowded sports car landscape.
