London’s design wizards at INK are at it again, throwing caution to the wind and giving the McLaren M6GT a jaw-dropping minimalist makeover in their latest Plainbodies series installment. Dubbed ‘Bruce’s Unfinished Masterpiece,’ this project pays homage to the legendary Bruce McLaren, the speed maestro behind McLaren racing who dreamt up the M6GT as the apex predator of road cars back in the late ’60s. This stripped-down specter of a race car not only screams minimalism but also serves as a tribute to automotive history’s relentless pursuit of speed and innovation.
INK, the brains behind the Plainbodies series, lays out their vision for the reimagined McLaren M6GT as a celebration of speed and form in their purest, unadulterated glory. They start with iconic race cars, peel away their classic liveries, and expose the raw, practical beauty beneath. The ‘Bruce’s Unfinished Masterpiece’ edition, cloaked in stark white, joins the ranks of other legends like the Porsche 917, Ferrari 330 P4, and Ford GT40. Using cutting-edge computer graphics techniques, the INK team meticulously reconstructs these automotive icons, breathing fresh life into their timeless designs with an unwavering commitment to minimalism.
Exploring the roots of the M6GT, INK delves into Bruce McLaren’s visionary quest for the ultimate road machine. The M6GT, born from the latest race technology, was a feather-light speed demon that exuded confidence and safety. It laid the foundation for McLaren’s road car legacy. However, in 1969, regulatory hurdles demanded fifty identical M6GT models, a challenge McLaren couldn’t conquer at the time. This unfortunate twist of fate consigned the M6GT to the archives as an unfinished masterpiece.
In 1970, tragedy struck as Bruce McLaren left the world, taking his M6GT dream with him. Yet, his legacy endured through the race-spec prototype, the OBH 500H, a testament to McLaren’s audacious ambition to conquer Le Mans and unleash a street-legal supercar shortly after the company’s inception.
James Ball, the Founding Director at INK, reflects on the project: ‘Stripping the car to its bare essentials and showcasing the purity of form pay tribute to Bruce’s vision.’ The ‘Bruce’s Unfinished Masterpiece’ McLaren M6GT stands as a testament to INK’s relentless pursuit of automotive excellence and their dedication to keeping the flames of iconic speedsters burning bright in the annals of history.
