At the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2024, BMW unveiled its futuristic concept car, Skytop, and the eye-catching BMW Motorrad R20 concept motorcycle. The R20 stole the show with its hot pink aluminum tank inspired by the 70s during the event held from May 24th to 26th.
The pink tank grabs attention, highlighting the bike’s carefully crafted details like cylinder head covers, belt cover, and air intake funnels, all in polished aluminum. The Paralever strut, footrest system, and gunmetal ISR brake calipers add to the bike’s striking appearance.
The Heart of the R20: The Big Boxer Engine
The BMW Motorrad R20’s main feature is its air-oil-cooled Big Boxer engine. The open intake, throttle bodies, and cylinders are prominently displayed, along with an open exhaust system and megaphone tailpipes that produce the Big Boxer engine’s distinctive roar. The cylinder head covers, belt cover, and oil cooler enhance the engine’s sleek design.
Innovative Design and Modern Technology
The R20’s seat, upholstered in quilted black Alcantara and fine-grain leather, integrates the taillight into its single-seat design. The LED headlight, made of 3D-printed aluminum, creates a floating ring light effect. The chrome-molybdenum steel tubes form the main frame, with a classic 17-inch disc wheel at the rear and a modern 17-inch spoke wheel at the front.
Advanced Suspension and Braking Systems
The motorcycle’s suspension features adjustable components from Öhlins at both the front and rear, along with BMW’s Paralever system. The steel swingarm and aluminum strut combination reduces shaft drive reaction. The shortened exposed driveshaft suits the R20’s design.
With a steering angle of 62.5 degrees and a 1,550 mm wheelbase, the R20 promises stability and precise handling. The braking system, with six pistons at the front and four at the rear, ensures excellent stopping power. The dual-pipe exhaust system enhances the bike’s sound and aesthetic.
The BMW Motorrad R20 is currently a concept, offering enthusiasts a glimpse into the future of motorcycling.
