Forget the open road – Audi is taking a detour into the home gym. The German marque has unveiled plans for a high-end exercise bike that brings its prestigious automotive DNA to the world of stationary cycling.
The Audi Smart Spinning Bike concept is the brainchild of Chinese designer Qingsheng Meng, who wondered what would happen if a luxury car brand applied its design philosophy to workout equipment. The result is a machine that trades four wheels for two pedals, but retains Audi’s sleek aesthetics and tech-savvy edge.
At first glance, the bike cuts a sportier figure than its gym counterparts. Its frame angles forward aggressively, hinting at speed with chiseled lines and a matte black-and-silver finish reminiscent of Audi’s road-sculpted models. But pragmatism lies beneath the pretty bodywork.
The Spinning Bike boasts an adjustable design that allows riders to tweak the seat, handlebars and other components for a tailored fit via push-button controls. An LCD touchscreen dashboard tracks workout stats like distance, calories and cadence, while offering adjustable resistance levels.
In a nod to Audi’s electric vehicle expertise, the bike converts human-powered pedal strokes into a charge for an onboard battery pack and removable power bank. So getting sweaty has the added perk of juicing up your mobile devices.
“It intelligentises traditional spinning bikes,” says Meng of his avant-garde concept, which he claims emphasises “Audi’s intelligent and simple brand attributes” for the at-home fitness realm.
While just a pipe dream for now, the Audi Smart Spinning Bike hints at luxury automakers’ potential to capitalize on lucrative lifestyle trends beyond a suite of cars. As Meng points out, if brands like Bose and Yamaha can peddle speakers and pianos alongside their core products, who’s to say Audi can’t also sell a healthy new lifestyle?
